- Rising intonation for yes/no questions: "Are you coming?" (voice goes up at end)
- Falling intonation for statements and wh-questions: "I am coming." "What is your name?" (voice falls)
- Polite requests usually rise to sound nicer
- Flat tone (no rise/fall) sounds angry or robotic in English
